VisionPro headset: Apple gets trolled on social media for hefty $3500 price tag

Apple unveiled its much-hyped mixed reality headset, VisionPro, at WWDC 2023 on 5 June. The newly announced headset is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2024 and is priced at around $3,500 (approximately ₹2,89,000). The $3,499 price tag has caught the attention of many people on social media platforms, which has led to a full on meme fest.
The VisionPro is powered by Apple’s M2 chip and is enabled with a new processor called R1, specifically for sensor processing. It comes with 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones.
Along with the headset, Apple also unveiled the new visionOS for the visionPRO. As visionOS is built on the ‘foundations’ of iOS and iPadOS, many of Apple’s existing apps should work on the new operating system. Meanwhile, the iPhone maker has announced support for many other applications, including Microsoft Office and video conferencing applications such as Zoom and WebEX.
In a blog post about the new AR/VR headset, Apple said, “Apple Vision Pro lets users capture, relive, and immerse themselves in favorite memories with Spatial Audio. Every spatial photo and video transports users back to a moment in time, like a celebration with friends or a special family gathering.”
Here’s how Social Media reacted to the new Apple headset:
Users were particularly worried about the pricing of the new headset at $ 3,500. Some users had a special list of demands that the headset should do for the hefty pricing. While users were left wondering if they should buy a car instead of the VisionPro headset, others drew comparisons of its looks with popular TV shows, movies and more.
The augmented and virtual reality headset is many times more expensive than its potential competitors, such as Meta’s Quest 3 headset, which only costs around $499.
